Spectrum of Thinking Interventions

Human Decision Making

The Spectrum of Thinking Interventions ranges from automatic (unconscious) to deliberate (conscious) thinking. UX designers can target different points on this spectrum.

On one end: habits, defaults, and nudges that require no thought. On the other: education, persuasion, and rational arguments that engage conscious reasoning.

Key insight: Most daily behaviors are automatic. Effective UX often works best when it aligns with automatic thinking rather than fighting against it.
