Dual Process Theory

Human Decision Making

Dual Process Theory describes two modes of thinking: System 1 (fast, automatic, intuitive) and System 2 (slow, deliberate, analytical).

System 1 handles most daily decisions instantly and effortlessly. System 2 kicks in for complex problems but requires conscious effort and is easily fatigued.

For UX: Design primarily for System 1. Make interfaces intuitive, use visual hierarchy, and reduce cognitive load. Reserve System 2 demands for truly important decisions.
