Replace the Routine

Behavior Change Strategies

Replacing the Routine keeps the existing cue and reward but substitutes a healthier or more productive behavior in between.

This works because the habit loop stays intact — only the middle step changes. The user still gets triggered and still gets a reward, but the action itself is different.

Example: Instead of reaching for your phone when bored (cue: boredom, reward: stimulation), a meditation app offers a 2-minute breathing exercise that provides the same stimulation relief.
